Becoming hypertext

UX+ Talk

"Maybe a website is also a small reality in itself; it gives you the rules for its shape..."

Performance lecture

To accompany an internet ambient performance at Kunst Kabinett in in Seoul, I wrote and prototyped a new networked performance on 'becoming hypertext' articulating my internet art practice anew – delivered on both projected screen and the audience's devices.

The talk was presented in both English and Korean. A whole transcript of the talk slowly unraveled in people's hands, and questions were presented to them that interacted with everyone else's device and the screen (such as answering questions, changing colors, or playing sounds). It was my most experimental talk so far technically, embarked on mostly to ensure that the audience could receive a Korean version of the talk... but in effect, I got to play with a lot more participatory elements that I wouldn't have tried otherwise.

I modified two MIDI controllers to perform the piece and the sounds... a necessity to make focus order tricks work. I as clicking, reading, twisting, and performing altogether as usual.

We did two runs of the performance and artists' talk on a Saturday and Sunday, a few days before Christmas. On Sunday, after my nerves with the new form were calmed, I got to take a long walk around Hyehwa and found a basement-level Filipino restaurant and market right around the corner, and streets lined with Filipino vendors around the circle – apparently Hyehwa turns into "Little Philippines" on Sundays.
